Twenty four and a half years ago, my Dad had to make a special trip into town to make sure that he could get me a copy of the N64 game “The Legend of Zelda: The Ocarina of Time” for Christmas[1]My expectations were high based on what I’d seen about the game, and I was not disappointed..I’d played a Legend of Zelda game before[2]Legend of Zelda II: The Adventure of Link on the NES. Yep, the “weird” one in the series., but this was where I truly got stuck into the series.

Over the years I enjoyed playing the games: laughing at the cartoonish expressions of Link in the Wind Waker, loving the arc of Midna and Link’s relationship through The Twilight Princess[3]Not the best game, but by far the best interactions between the companion character and Link. Midna is great., or grappling with the motion controls of Skyward Sword to show Ghirahim that Link was a force to be reckoned with. Seven years ago, I even timed a visit to my parents so that I could also go to the Legend of Zelda concert – the Symphony of the Goddesses[4]This footnote is too small to contain all my appreciation for the music from the series, which may eventually get its own blogpost..

Recently the latest instalment in the franchise, “Tears of the Kingdom”, was released on Nintendo Switch.

And I currently have no plans to play it.

This isn’t because I’m “putting away childish things” – even adults (perhaps especially adults) need some sort of play. In fact, I’d love to buy and play it. However, that’s not where my life is right now – financially or temporally! In fact, I’ve still not finished Breath of the Wild on my Wii U yet[5]It’s thanks to this lack of time that I’ve not been able to justify buying myself a Switch at all.

I still love the series, and I hope that in the future I’ll be able to jump back in (and so have some context for the random images[6]Thankfully not *that* kind of image. and videos[7]Or *that* kind of video I’ve been unable to avoid on the internet). This waxing and waning of interests is natural in anyone’s life – even for big fans. So I’ll still call myself a Legend of Zelda fan, just like I still call myself a Star Wars fan despite having not seen so much of the more recent stuff, and comfortably ignore anyone who thinks that being where I am now somehow makes me a “lesser” fan.

And I hope if you find yourself in a similar situation, you can do the same.
